Karina Brown
Founder and Executive Director of Equitrial and Coach
Meet our Directors
Karina Brown is a senior at the Alexander W. Dreyfoos School of the Arts. She is the co-founder and co-president of her school’s Mock Trial team, which recently placed Top 3 at regional competition, and a nationally competitive Congressional Debater on the national circuit. Karina has advanced to finals at prestigious tournaments including the Sunvitational, Florida Blue Key and its Round Robin, Katy Taylor TFA, and multiple Digital Tournament of Champions. She also has experience competing in World Schools Debate.
Karina co-founded Mock Trial alongside her co-president, Gavin Murray, after attending a 10-day intensive in Texas to master an event often inaccessible to schools without prior institutional support. Through this experience, she recognized a systemic inequity in Mock Trial: smaller or under-resourced schools are expected to qualify for state competitions despite limited access to local tournaments and resources, often with only one qualifying spot available.
Driven by a commitment to equity, mentorship, and community service, Karina helped launch EquiTrial, an initiative dedicated to leveling the playing field in Mock Trial by expanding access to training, resources, and guidance. Through her work, she seeks to ensure that justice in competition is shaped not by privilege, but by preparation, passion, and opportunity.
Jake Zeng
Case Director
Jake Zeng is a Senior at American Heritage Broward in Fort Lauderdale, Florida. He has competed in Mock Trial since he was in 7th grade as both a witness and a lawyer. He is the reigning Florida Mock Trial state champion, having also ranked individually as the second-best witness in the competition. As a lawyer, Jake ranked 3rd as a team at Florida State University’s Sunshine State Showdown, and 4th at the Colorado Providence Cup, where he also ranked in the top 10 individually. Outside of Mock Trial, Jake competes in Moot Court, in which he is also Florida’s reigning state champion. He also has competed in debate for 7 years, ranking in the top 32 teams nationally two years in a row. Jake is incredibly passionate about spreading knowledge about the law, given its complexity, to the average person. He believes competing in legal competitions like Moot Court and especially Mock Trial has the potential to educate every new generation on how they can navigate the seemingly unapproachable field of the law.
